9th APEEN Annual Conference
Decarbonising the Economy: Investment, Regulation and Social Impact









The 9th APEEN Annual Conference took place on 19 and 20 March 2026 at the University of Aveiro, establishing itself as one of the main forums for scientific and interdisciplinary debate on the challenges of the energy transition in Portugal and in Europe.
Under the central theme “Decarbonising the Economy: Investment, Regulation and Social Impact”, the conference brought together researchers, policy makers and representatives of business and civil society over two days of academic sessions, round tables and plenary presentations.
Keynotes
Hugo Lucas Porta opened the conference with the keynote “Energy Consumption in the Industrial Sector in Spain”, analysing the challenges of industrial decarbonisation and the evolution of energy policies in Spain.
Júlia Seixas closed with the keynote “The Future of Competitiveness is Driven by Zero-Carbon Innovation”, highlighting the central role of low-carbon innovation in economic and business competitiveness.
Round Tables
Round Table 1 — ESG and Corporate Social Responsibility: Challenges for Companies
With Carlos Eduardo Martins, Inês dos Santos Costa, Mónica Luízio and Pedro Ávila. The participants explored the challenges of integrating ESG criteria into business strategies, sustainable finance and the role of companies in the energy transition.
Round Table 2 — Energy Justice and Inclusion: Equitable Access to Investment and Technology
With Ana Rita Antunes, Bruno Veloso, João Pedro Gouveia and Miguel Oliveira. The discussion covered energy poverty, equitable access to energy and inclusive models of investment and technological innovation.

The conference was organised by the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism (DEGEIT) and the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP) of the University of Aveiro, coordinated by Anabela Botelho, Mara Madaleno, Margarita Robaina, Marta Ferreira Dias, Mónica Meireles, Daniel Magueta and Kouassi Hayaka.
